Website Design – in 4 Simple Steps

Website design really is at the epicentre of any business in 2021. It is now someone’s first port of call, with there being BILLIONS of Google searches each and every day. Coming from BILLIONS of internet users around the world, showing the potential reach there is from using the internet. It is all well and good using the internet to enhance your business, but your website will speak volumes. It represents who you are, what you do, how welcoming you are and so much more.

This blog will go on to discuss the different ways you can use your website to your advantage, and tips to improve to enhance your website and business. 

The name 

            It may seem obvious but you want your domain name – which is the name that appears at the top of the screen with .co.uk or .com following it. This must be relevant to your business, as sometimes the exact match is not available, but it is always a good idea to get something close. And at the same time not too long, picture yourself typing it in, in your search bar. You don’t want to be typing forever, you want it short and sweet. After the .com or whatever you might have, each page should have a separate URL. This should identify each individual page of your website, all clearly outlined by the end of the URL.

For SEO purposes (check out our SEO blog), use hyphens in between each word rather than dashes etc. All helping your website become responsive. This part may seem self explanatory but it does need thinking through, which shows the complexity of website design. 

Layout 

            The layout is more important that it might seem. You want to take your potential customer on a customer purchase journey through decision making. To start with they want to feel introduced to whatever your business might be, with a short introduction and image to represent you. Every step in the decision making process should be followed by a call to action (CTA), something that they can click on to go to more information, purchase and more. After the intro that should be followed by a bit more information, as you now have them intrigued and they are searching for more info.

Once the information has been given, examples should be given to demonstrate the skills and what you offer more than your competitors. You can see how this rhythm works, you always need to think about the end user, and what journey they need to be taken on. Again this is all a crucial part of effective and responsive website design. 

Design 

            This is so much more important than people think. Because as mentioned your website is the number one place to go when potential customers are researching you, you want it to appeal to them. From the logo being relevant and matching in with the theme, to the colour scheme tying it all together. This all leads to a consistent and continual experience for the user which is key. You want it to be a enjoyable experience throughout, so make sure all the text is readable. This can be done very simply just by changing the colour of the text, so it doesn’t clash with the image or background colour.

Pages 

            This is a more difficult aspect to get right, the amount of pages for your website. Obviously, a homepage is key, as again this is the main thing Google will look at for SEO. Then there needs to be an ‘about us’ page, a great place to tell your potential customers about you. It is recommended there are at least 5 pages on a website, but the more the better really. Remember to put all the details someone could ever want, address, contact information, how to get in touch. You need to answer most if not all of the questions you think a customer might ask you, about anything. So it might be handy to have a Frequently Asked Questions page (FAQ’s). these are all additions that make the experience better, which as mentioned always must be your priority.
